LA QUEMA DE PPK

The Burning of PPK

1st of April, 2018. Arequipa, Perú.

In this Andean and second largest city, locals habitually flock to the Yanahuara district to witness a customary catholic ritual of the burning of Judas. This Easter, however, the ritual is far from familiar as the figure of treason is Peru’s very own former President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (PPK), who was forced to resign just a few days before this rite took place, given his escalating involvement in the Odebrecht corruption scandal as well as his attempt to buy votes against his impeachment.

This forthcoming film captures the current political climate in Perú, where the spiralling disillusion of the Peruvian people towards PPK and the political elite also coexists with hope for new beginnings and honest politics. As we witness the mannequin of the once ‘presidential candidate of hope’ turn into ashes, we hear Peruvians’ uncertain predictions on the state of corruption: will it be swept off the nation’s feet or is there a phoenix-like resilience that will make it rise once again?
