HURRICANE MARIA & THE BORICUA STRUGGLE

On September the 20th 2017, Puerto Rico was tragically hit by Hurricane Maria, a category 4 storm with sustained and violent winds of 155mph.

It brought catastrophic damage to the island at every level, plunging it into a spiralling black-hole of crises – from severely destroyed infrastructure, shortages in food and water to an ever-growing exodus coupled with widespread cases of mental depression.

On the day of the storm, hundreds of vulnerable Boricuans (Puerto Ricans) sought refuge at the Roberto Clemente Colosseum in San Juan.  These photographs and upcoming short film recount the many experiences of that day, as well as the aftermath, once out in the streets, of an uprooted and devastated nation.
